PROJECT ENGINEER
Position Summary
The Project Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, permitting, and coordination of civil engineering projects from concept through construction. This position supports Project Managers and serves as a technical lead on site development projects including commercial, residential, industrial, institutional, and mixed-use developments throughout the Southeastern United States.
The ideal candidate possesses strong technical design skills, project coordination abilities, and a thorough understanding of local, state, and federal regulations governing land development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Project Delivery
- Prepare and oversee the design of site development plans including:
- Site layout and grading
- Stormwater management systems
- Erosion and sediment control plans
- Utility design (water, sewer, and reclaimed water)
- Roadway and parking lot design
- Drainage and hydrologic/hydraulic analyses
- Develop construction documents, technical specifications, and engineering reports.
- Perform engineering calculations and quality control reviews.
- Coordinate project deliverables to meet client schedules and budgets.
- Assist in developing project scopes, schedules, and fee estimates.
Permitting & Regulatory Coordination
- Prepare permit applications and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with municipalities, counties, state agencies, utility providers, and reviewing authorities.
- Address review comments and obtain project approvals.
- Maintain knowledge of local development ordinances, stormwater regulations, and permitting requirements throughout the Southeast.
Project Coordination
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for assigned projects.
- Coordinate with clients, architects, planners, surveyors, landscape architects, geotechnical engineers, and other consultants.
- Participate in client meetings, public meetings, and regulatory agency meetings as needed.
- Monitor project progress and communicate status updates to Project Managers and clients.
Construction Administration
- Respond to contractor Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Review shop drawings and submittals for general conformance with design intent.
- Conduct site visits and prepare observation reports.
- Assist with project closeout and record document preparation.
Team Leadership
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to engineering interns, EITs, and CAD designers.
- Review engineering and drafting work for accuracy and completeness.
- Support continuous improvement of engineering standards and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required.
- 1–6 years of civil engineering experience in land development or site design.
- Proficiency with:
- AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Hydrology and hydraulic modeling software
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong understanding of:
- Site grading and drainage design
- Stormwater management practices
- Utility design standards
- Erosion and sediment control requirements
- Local permitting processes
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure within four years.
- Experience working on projects in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, or surrounding Southeastern states.
- Familiarity with state stormwater regulations and NPDES permitting requirements.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of GIS, Hydraflow, HEC-RAS, ICPR, WaterCAD, or similar software.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform occasional field visits to active construction sites.
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain and construction areas.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to travel periodically throughout the Southeastern United States.
