The Legal Aid Society’s (LAS) Criminal Defense Practice Paralegal Services Unit has unpaid internship opportunities for the Fall 2026 term. The internship provides students with hands-on experience in public interest law and advocacy. This role offers exposure to the legal system while contributing to meaningful work that impacts underserved communities.

Program Details 

  • The Fall 2026 Internship Program begins on August 31, 2026, and runs through December 10,2026. The internship is an unpaid, part-time, in-and person. No remote positions are available. 
  • Location: In-person at one of The Legal Aid Society’s borough offices 
  • Hours: 18–28 hours per week  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Perform clerical, organizational, and project-based assignments necessary to support litigation teams 
  • Support attorneys and Litigation Assistants in preparing exhibits, documents, videos, and demonstratives for hearings or trials 
  • Accompany attorneys to court, when appropriate, to observe proceedings and assist with logistics 
  • Other duties as assigned 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Currently enrolled as a junior or senior in an accredited educational institution pursuing an undergraduate degree  
  • Strong writing, research, computer technology, social media, and communication skills are required 
  • Demonstrated commitment to racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities 
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all members of the staff 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and think critically 
  • Comfortable traveling throughout NYC
