Engineering Intern – Injection Molding

Job Overview
The Injection Molding Internship provides hands-on exposure to high-volume medical device manufacturing with a focus on process performance, waste reduction, and operational excellence. Interns will partner with Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, and Operations teams to analyze performance losses, improve changeover efficiency, strengthen data accuracy, and support continuous improvement initiatives. This role emphasizes practical application of Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and reliability concepts in a regulated environment.
Main Responsibilities
- Scrap Reduction & Defect Analysis
- Analyze scrap trends by machine, mold, material, and shift
- Identify top defect categories and drivers
- Partner with Quality and Engineering to validate root causes
- Support development of corrective actions
- Track effectiveness of implemented improvements
- Overall Equipment Effectiveness Performance Optimization
- Evaluate current OEE data (Availability, Performance, Quality)
- Identify major loss contributors
- Validate accuracy of data collection
- Support standardization of OEE reporting
- Recommend improvement initiatives
- Downtime Data Accuracy & Analysis
- Review downtime coding and reporting practices
- Identify gaps, misclassification, and inconsistencies
- Observe real-time downtime events
- Partner with supervisors and technicians to improve data capture
- Develop standardized downtime definitions
- SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) & Changeover Reduction
- Map current mold change and setup processes
- Conduct time studies on changeovers
- Separate internal vs. external activities
- Identify opportunities for parallel work and standardization
- Pilot improved changeover methods
Skills and Qualification
- Working toward Life Science or Engineering degree.
- Knowledge of and ability to use process management tools
- Customer orientation and the ability to identify and effectively manage stakeholder expectations
- Ability to prioritize and to thrive in a cross-functional, inter-company and international environment
- A solution-oriented growth mindset
- Fluent in English language, written and spoken
- Team player and self-starter
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects · simultaneously.
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, including FDA regulations and ISO standards.
- Knowledge of Lean 6S & Six Sigma, Continuous cost reduction and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex control issues.
