POSITION DESCRIPTION:
We are seeking a motivated senior undergraduate student or recent graduate with experience in GIS or web mapping to help develop an interactive geo-visualization platform and map-based decision-support tool (DST) for studying historic rice fields in coastal South Carolina. This project aims to provide waterfowl and landscape managers with a user-friendly tool that integrates ecological data, climate variables, and historic landscape information.
You will collaborate with faculty, staff, and community partners to translate project needs into a functional, visually intuitive mapping application. The ideal candidate has completed at least one related project (course-based or professional) that demonstrates competency in GIS, web mapping, or interactive data visualization.
KEY RESPONSABILITIES:
- Work with faculty/staff/students to identify project needs and translate them into basic product requirements.
- Assist with designing and developing a web-based GIS application, including:
- Map navigation, layer toggles, search, pop-ups, and scale-aware symbols.
- Simple data summaries or charts that update when interacting with the map.
- Basic in-app documentation, download links, and metadata access.
- Prepare and manage geospatial layers (raster and vector) by cleaning, formatting, and organizing datasets.
- Support setup of the back-end environment (e.g., PostGIS, ArcGIS Online, GeoServer) with guidance from the project team.
- Test the application for usability, accessibility, and performance, and recommend improvements.
- Assist in developing user guides and presenting the tool to researchers or partners.
- Help maintain and update the platform over the course of the project.
