Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Microbiology, Department of Biological Sciences

Description

The Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University invites applications for a 9-month, renewable, non-tenure track Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position in Microbiology, beginning August 15, 2026. We seek a dedicated educator with a strong interest in undergraduate microbiology instruction. The Department is looking to expand our course offerings in environmental microbiology, and candidates with expertise in soil, marine, ecological, industrial, or bioremediation-focused areas are especially encouraged to apply.

We value candidates who foster inclusive and engaging learning environments and who are committed to broadening participation in science both in the classroom and the broader community.

Primary responsibilities during the academic year will include teaching in-person undergraduate courses with medium to large enrollments. These may include:

• Soil Microbiology

• Marine Microbiology

• Industrial Microbiology

• Introductory Microbiology

• Additional course(s) aligned with the candidate’s expertise

Additional responsibilities include:

• Designing and delivering effective course content

• Assessing student learning and providing constructive feedback

• Utilizing the Canvas learning management system

• Holding regular office hours to support student success

• Collaborating with colleagues to continuously improve the undergraduate experience

Opportunities may be available to teach in other areas, including:

Lecturers are expected to participate in departmental service and engage in the broader academic life of the Department. The Department supports professional development and growth through the Lecturer promotion track (Lecturer → Senior Lecturer → Principal Lecturer).

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

About the Department

The Department of Biological Sciences, housed in the College of Science, spans the disciplines of:

• Microbiology

• Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology

• Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology

• Environmental Toxicology

We are a diverse community of ~55 full-time faculty (including ~22 lecturers), serving over 2,000 undergraduate majors in Biological Sciences and Microbiology and ~220 graduate students, including:

• M.S. and Ph.D. students in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, and Toxicology

• ~150 students enrolled in our online M.S. in Biological Sciences for Science Educators

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Microbiology or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

• Excellence in teaching or assisting in university-level courses

• Strong communication skills, including science communication and outreach

• A commitment to inclusive teaching practices
