Alert!: Job Seeker Scams
A number of fraudulent emails have been sent to Clemson students under the guise of offering some form of employment. Visit our Job Seeker Scams page for more information.
Internships offer the unique opportunity to gain career-related experience in a variety of settings. Now, more than ever, employers look to hire college graduates with internship experience in their field.
Students should remember that while searching for an internship, there are criteria that University looks for before agreeing to award academic internship credit. For example, the opportunity needs to be tied to specific Clemson University majors or fields of interest, supervised by a professional working in the field, and the majority of the work needs to be non-administrative/non-manual labor. In short, a quality internship should outline either a strong shadowing experience with specific learning outcomes, or an assigned project with clearly stated responsibilities/expectations.
If you are registered for CCINT 101 or CCINT 201 it is possible to save your LIFE Scholarship or other financial aid while your complete your internship experience. It is your responsibility to discuss this with the financial aid office prior to your internship experience.
All students are eligible to complete an internship. Most companies look to hire rising juniors and seniors, but a rising sophomore with experience is also a strong candidate. All students are encouraged to apply for internships.
Back to topIn a recent study, National Association of Colleges and Employers found that 92% of internships are paid. The pay rate will depend on your experience, position, and the individual company. Many internships in non-profit, teaching, or service industries are un-paid. For these experiences, possibly seek out internships with a grant to cover your stipend.
Back to topAn internship can be completed during fall, spring, or summer semesters. When to complete an internship and for how long should be determined by your individual career goals, financial situation, and academic standing.
Back to topSome employers will provide housing free of charge, others will help connect you with fellow interns to find an apartment in the area. There is no easy answer because level of involvement in finding housing varies from employer to employer. For more information on finding housing, visit our page on internship resources.
