You have been offered the job… now what?
How do I accept an offer? Once you have decided to accept the offer, verbally contact the employer and follow-up with a confirmation letter. Be sure to include the position, start date, rate of pay and any newly negotiated items in your confirmation letter. Keep a copy of the letter for future reference.
After I accept, can I change my mind? Acceptance of an employment offer should be made in good faith and with the sincere intention to honor the commitment to start the job. It would be viewed as unprofessional and unethical should you renege on your commitment, which reflects not only on you, but also on Clemson. Do not accept an offer before you are ready. If you are waiting to hear back from other employers, you can always ask for more time to decide. However, at some point you might need to turn down a job offer if it isn’t the right fit for you. After all, you don’t want to be back on the job market next year because you didn’t like your first job. You are welcome to discuss this dilemma with the Career Center prior to making a decision.
What about salary? Before you interview, you should know the average starting salary in your field. Check out the Clemson salary survey and related resources Even though you have heard about negotiating salary offers, most employers hiring new graduates have a standard pay scale, taking into consideration your previous experience like internships and co-ops. That being said, if you feel the salary you were offered is low, you don’t lose anything by asking for an increase. Have a $5,000 range in mind that you would accept. Also consider negotiating on items other than salary, such as retirement, time off, flexible schedule, or other valuable benefits.
How do I withdraw on other offers? Notify all pertinent employers that you have accepted an offer and wish to have your name withdrawn from further consideration. Express your appreciation for the opportunity to interview. Also remove your resume(s) out of the resume book in ClemsonJobLink.
How do I handle exploding offers? “Exploding offers” are those with an immediate deadline. Some employers may attempt to pressure you into accepting an offer immediately, thereby lessening the opportunity for competing offers. If faced with this, please contact the Michelin Career Center’s Director of Recruiting, dherman@clemson.edu
